Changing Mathematics Curriculum in England

In my brief presentation, I will attempt to describe the recent major changes in the mathematics curriculum in England.  It is a great challenge to describe changes within an already complicated educational system which has seen a constant revision of content and organisation. The changes are driven centrally and motivated by the  educational targets set by the government.

International comparative studies and the desire to compete with other industrial countries have led to a transformation of what was an autonomous system of education where teachers were left to take professional decisions to a prescriptive system where teachers are seen as technicians.  I will attempt to demonstrate these changes within the context of secondary school mathematics using specific examples of  content, teaching methods and assessment.
